more joy

Advocate for more joy!

“Imagine if instead of tearing people down, we make a habit of lifting people up.”

I’ve been hooked on the idea of people wearing whatever they want - the idea of having fun while dressing up, regardless of whatever any third party has to say. You wear it because you love it, because it was fun thinking of it and actually seeing what it looks like on you. It’s a gorgeous feeling, it’s a joyous feeling. We spend so much of our time caring a little bit too much about what person x has to say or what person y thinks of what we’re doing. Last week, I mentioned hypnotizing yourself with yourself - the concept of self-love and acceptance - spending time with yourself, learning more about yourself, appreciating and being true to who you are, comes with a sense of joy and relief.

On looking outwards, you’d probably realize you learn so much more about joy when you’re outdoors, or in the presence of other people. I’m referring to the random things that make us smile and appreciate life a little more when we go outside; seeing someone with good news waltz through the door, ready and excited to share; someone celebrating their birthday in a restaurant and seemingly shy about the waiters coming to jauntily sing them “happy birthday”. There’s so much joy outside, I think it’s why being in lockdown for an extended time in 2020 was so difficult for many, most notably from the second/third month of quarantine. When you leave your house, you never know exactly what’s going to happen, what or who you’re going to see - this is true especially if you live in a city. So keep your eyes and heart open, because joy is something you can see AND feel.

Is “more joy” something you need to achieve or something that’s already there that you need to activate?

There’s a saying: “si tienes miedo de vivir tu vida porque podrias morir, entonces ya has muerto.” It translates: “if you’re afraid to live your life because you could die, then you’re already dead.” I’ve come across people who believe being so positive is unrealistic - referring to the complexities that life can bring. I’ve also met people who believe they have to do extravagant things for something to be worth enjoying - citing that as the reason they don’t self-care or explore often. If we let every difficult thing impede us from moving on or trying something new, then we’ve essentially resigned ourselves to whatever circumstance we face. Instead of making those uncomfortable situations a cycle of disappointment, we could see it as a tunnel - getting into something we can get out of. There’s always gonna be something that comes up; everyone faces some sort of difficulty, no one and nothing equates to perfection. Upon reflecting, what really matters is how we handle problems when they arise, not necessarily (or not always) the problem itself.

We really have to keep on living, everyday is a new quest, a new search for something new, something that reminds us of the joy that is life.

a reminder to stay positive:

“Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy — dwell on these things. Do what you have learned and received and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Philippians 4:8-9
