The relief of art

Art: Kinshasa at Noon, Moke

If there’s anything that can meticulously and somehow sufficiently capture life in a way that pulsates, it’s art. Sure, there are the complexities and history that follows it but there’s also the fact that it’s so compelling that you find yourself glued to it, immersed in it, till the next thing comes.

The relief part comes from what’s evoked in the audience, like when you’re reading a piece of any kind, and can relate or at least understand a certain circumstance in a way that makes you feel like the words were written for you. Or even aspect of certain characters, whether fictional or nonfictional, that you find yourself relating to, or at least wanting to reveal that part of yourself.

The relatability is also relief. Art that captures culture moves a different way. The art of what you’ve known, what you’ve grown with, what you’ve seen, can hardly be imitated because it’s something close to your heart.

Art: Glenn, Jean-Michel Basquiat

A really good song, and I mean lyric - wise, is art. There’s a nostalgia that attaches itself to such a piece, that sort of familiarity with what is unfamiliar — Evidence the artist’s message was successfully conveyed - the artist’s job is done.

The exemplar things - the people, places or circumstance that illustrate features we admire. That’s a special form of art, the sort that stimulates something unique in ourselves, that makes understand what we truly want. An instance are some of the characters we see in The Bible, people that exude love, faith and kindness. Another instance would be the mind. I had a conversation about this recently, how there’s a special kind of beauty with people who have such a unique way of thinking; the openness of their mind, the intelligible sounds of thought, almost like magic.

Science. The insignificance of what we are is very pivotal. The notion that we in fact, aren’t the center of the universe is just perfect for the egocentric! In all seriousness, science has proven to be part of that relief. It alleviates the severity of life and really just makes you question perspective. There are people who understand that, with or without delving into existential crisis, which is arguably needed to arrive at that conclusion. Science has made people curious about just about everything, and in that curiosity, we have found some answers; art is left for the answers we are yet to find.
