a self-care edition

I haven’t done a self-care post in a while and gosh did I miss it! I’ve curated a list of self-care ideas below, enjoy!!!

  • Let’s talk about that “My list” feature

Some of our lists have an extensive row of entertainment and we often say there’s never anything to watch on Netflix! How about this: pick something from that list you think will be good, or you think you’ll enjoy and start watching! If it’s under your favorite genre or has themes you usually go for, there’s a high chance you’ll enjoy the watch! Also, do a quick scan of your list; please do yourself a favor and eliminate the movies/series you’re no longer interested in! Make way for new ideas, new series, that you’re genuinely intrigued by. When you have time, do a search, watch a trailer or two to determine which you’d like to watch, for things are not always as they seem. Perhaps if you have new series you’re interested in, you’ll be more likely to move it from “(your) list” to “continue watching”.

  • The film camera

So my polaroid is huge, and I don’t always feel like carrying it around except for what I consider special purposes. I still absolutely love it though. However, I had never used 35mm film camera (that wasn’t disposable) before, until recently, and now, I carry it pretty much everywhere. It doesn’t print on the spot like a polaroid, rather I’ve got to get the film developed when it’s all used up - point is, it gets the job done. Why do I do this? It brings such a good feeling, it’s hard to even explain - there’s a subtlety and excitement in recording daily life or whatever you choose to capture, on this vintage device. I recommend!

    • !! - If you have no interest in photography or getting into film any time soon, I recommend substituting this tip for a hobby you’ve got or one you’d like to pick up. I find that doing something you genuinely care about sort of balances the scales of daily life. It’s refreshing, keeps you looking forward to something, brings you joy etc. it’s a win-win situation, really.

  • The podcast revolution

I want to use this opportunity to salute anyone who hosts a podcast and anyone who listens to them. They’re incredible. I never quite understood why podcasts were so popular, until very recently (making this suggestion a little tricky). I used to scour the podcast app in search of one and just couldn’t find any I liked; I often saw how people would talk of how *that* true crime podcast, or podcasts by people they follow on social media were sooo good. I didn’t think I was a podcast person for the longest time but, it was just because I was yet to find one I was drawn to. Now, you may also think you’re not a podcast person (and you might actually not be) but please, please give it a try, you perhaps haven’t found one enthralling enough so don’t give up! If you don’t feel like listening to music or anything you usually listen to when you’ve got time, you can try a podcast episode! If it turns out podcasts aren’t for you, then at leasts you tried, which is always good.

  • Getting tasks done

I don’t know why I don’t see this often. When you do the tasks/accomplish the goals you set for yourself for the day, there’s a short list of things that are more soothing than that. What it means, is that you are free to breathe for the rest of the day, to do anything else that isn’t required or that doesn’t have a deadline. It’s literal freedom. If you’re in uni especially (or any other level of education), trust me, this works. I know it’s easier said than done, but try it at least once, and see the results yourself!!
